In this body of work, I juxtapose children in real life social contexts with hyper-mediated presentations of children through social media images. My series Flia (slang for family in Uruguay) consists of a collection of figurative paintings from photographs I took capturing familial love and gestures of affection. #ourkids is a series of paintings of appropriated Instagram images of minors. #ourkids is painted with elements of realism, the moment in time captured by the lens, whereas the figures in Flia are further broken down and contain only cartoon-like line and brightly colored shapes. I compare the way in which people present themselves in the virtual world and the physical world. As we spend more and more time looking at images on social media rather than life in front of us, I question whether we are taking digital platforms too seriously and beginning to accept them as being more real that reality itself. As our reliance on virtual worlds grows so do our beliefs in them. The line between the real and the irreal is blurred as image posts are given more weight than real life experiences.
