On Becoming

This series references the change in mindset I had to make after I became a mom. Before motherhood, I held onto the notion that everything that felt uncomfortable was probably bad for me and thus, not worth pursuing. Despite having witnessed my immigrant parents face adversity to achieve the American dream, I felt that life should be easy, and anything too difficult was just not worth doing. Since then, I've realized hard is not the same as bad. In fact, hard can be healthy due to its transformative nature with difficult moments as learning opportunities.

The paintings of my kids' screaming faces are meant to evoke discomfort, referring to the normal fears and difficulties involved in having and raising children. The use of vibrant colors, however, is optimistic, pointing to the unique fulfillment that comes from parenting. Blooming plants serve as symbols for realizing one’s true potential. Like sunflower seeds transform into majestic sunflowers and rose cuttings into more roses, each of us is born to serve a unique purpose. Many plants refuse to flower unless their needs are fully met through proper sunlight, water, and nutrients. Likewise, our human potential lies dormant until it is activated through life’s tests.
